- Ingredients:
- 8 parts Rye or Bourbon
- 3-4 parts simple syrup
- Several dashes of bitters (Angostura or Peychaud)
- Counts:
- I typically do something like 8 count Rye/Bourbon, 3 count simple syrup, 4-5 dashes of bitters
- Garnish:
- Skewered orange peel and Cherry(s)
- Variations:
- Here you might want to play with the ratios to see what suits your flavor preferences (I go heavier on bitters for instance)
- Try different Rye or Bourbon
- You can try different cherries but would reiterate that Luxardo Maraschino are by far the best
- There are different specialty bitters you can get like spicy flavored and the like, if you like things a little spicy
- If you really want to get adventurous, you can do a smoked old fashion where you smoke your glass for a few minutes before making your drink with mesquite, oak, pecan wood, or cinnamon before mixing in the ingredients. The bar at the Four Seasons in SF is a good place to hit for a drink and has a ridiculously good smoked old fashion
- Storage:
- Simple syrup definitely goes in the fridge; Otherwise everything can go on the shelf (I saw the email to refrigerate the cherries but I don’t do that with my Luxardo cherries and have never gotten sick)
